Wolf Point, MT to Culbertson, MT 57 Miles June 9

Sunrise on the Prairie

Gerri Draper made sure breakfast was laid out for us the night before. But she and George still got out of bed at dawn to see us off at 6:00 AM.

Leaving Wolf Point, MT (early)

Our route now parallels the Missouri River. I do not know the meaning of Missouri, but today I think it means hilly. We had MANY long stretches of one hill after another. I kept expecting to be able to coast down, when I noticed another group of hills ahead. We had to work for our elevation today as we didn't have those steroidal winds to power us over the tops.

I arrived at the United Methodist Church in Culbertson just before the rains came down. We crossed paths with some young touring cyclists today. They left Culbertson at 10:30 AM. They are getting wet, Pam smugly reminded me. Yes, I am grateful for Pam's nudging to get us on the road at the earliest hour possible.

A Rider's Namesake

Pam CULBERTSON was excited to arrive in Culbertson, MT today. Mary Lou Weeks came to the church to welcome us and give us the grand tour of Culbertson. We loved the Culbertson Museum. It is filled with artifacts, which are beautifully displayed and depict life over the years on the Prairie. A bill for a doctor's visit, $3.00. We saw antique farm implements, ladies hats, even hand made quilts. She also showed us the Missouri Breaks, the reddish hills which make up the banks of the Missouri River.

Mary Lou Weeks and Barbara

Mary Lou's daughter Laurie Mattelin dashed over to the church on her lunch hour to prepare a homemade lasagna she made for us.

The sun is out now and we are enjoying moseying around Culbertson.

So I never noticed: you and carol have big ol' packs on the front AND back of your bikes, yet I don't see any on the front of Pam's. I can't believe anyone packs lighter than you, Miss Barbara T. Say it ain't so. I'm sure there must be an alternate explanation.
So, besides being hilly, was the Missouri River a sight? Wasn't it the Missouri that Huck Finn traveled up (or down?). I don't think it was the Mississippi in that book, but maybe my memory is failing me once again.
So it sounds like you had a ride that was sorta uphill both ways.
Man, the rains are sure chasing you. It's June for crying out loud. Don't the other states know it's not the rainy season after April? I mean, they had May to wind down. Seriously, is it normal to have this much rain at the end of may and beginning of June in good ol' MT? Maybe not, if the farmers were relieved to see it. Maybe it's just late in coming this year -- just in the honor of 3 women STILL on the prairie.
